Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo pleads not guilty to impeachment charges before Senate
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has pleaded not guilty before the Senate to two impeachment charges linked to Bunge Mashinani, staff recruitment and medical claims, as senators prepare for full hearings.
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has denied the two impeachment charges levelled against him by the Nyamira County Assembly, telling the Senate that he is not guilty of the allegations.
The charges, presented in the Senate chamber on Wednesday, include gross violation of the Constitution and other laws. According to the clerk of the Senate, the allegations stem from the governor’s conduct regarding Bunge Mashinani, staff recruitment and medical claims.

“Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo, the Governor of Nyamira County, the charges against you as received from the County Assembly are as follows: gross violation of the Constitution 2010 and the County Governments Act 2012 through deliberate formal engagement, endorsement, and support of unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional Bunge Mashinani,” the clerk stated.
Nyaribo denied all the charges, stating, "Not guilty."
The Senate is now expected to schedule further proceedings to hear the governor’s defence and determine the next steps in the impeachment process.
His defence team has challenged the impeachment motion, arguing that it is procedurally flawed and fails to meet constitutional requirements.
“At the end of my presentation, honourable senators, you will have no doubt in your mind that the motion before you is based on a foundation that is constitutionally rotten, procedurally fraudulent and mathematically impossible,” Nyaribo's Counsel Advocate Elias Mutuma said.
The defence also argues that only 19 members were present in the chamber to vote on the motion to impeach the governor, while the tally showed 23 votes, exceeding the number of legislators physically present.
“Honourable Senators, the record before you will demonstrate that there were 19 members present who voted to impeach the Governor. However, strangely, 23 votes were generated from a total of 19 members who were present in chambers. It's the joke of the year,” Mutuma added.
